CHANGES TO THE APPOINTMENT SYSTEM

Posted on February 11th, 2020

As a practice we are aware of the increasing difficulties patients are experiencing in getting an appointment.

In an attempt to increase capacity and manage the appointments more appropriately we are planning some changes to the appointments system. The system, called telephone triage system, will commence from the 16th of March 2020 and we would ask that you bear with us while we embed it.

This means that you let us know when you want medical advice and a doctor will call you back. The doctor will assess your condition.

When advice only is required, it will be given by the doctor over the telephone. After this assessment, if the doctor thinks that you need an appointment it will be booked for you.

If you are happy to wait between 3-6 weeks to see the Doctor, there are some available pre-bookable appointments that can be booked on-line or via reception. All other appointments will require a telephone assessment.

How Will It Work?

Advance routine ‘book ahead’ appointments will continue to be available and can be booked a few weeks in advance either online, via the telephone or in person. From the 16th March we will offer telephone assessment slots each day in which a GP will call you during the morning surgery.  The doctor will briefly discuss your health issue with you and agree whether you need to be seen in surgery or alternatively if they can resolve the matter over the telephone i.e. issue a prescription, referral or offer advice.  If you do need to be seen they will book you in to an appropriate appointment slot depending on their clinical assessment.

The Process

  1. Telephone the Surgery (01296 688949 / 681814) and select Option 1. Tell the receptionist that you would like an appointment. They will ask you if it is urgent. Urgent calls are booked with the Duty Doctor. All other requests will be booked with one of the other Doctors.
  2. The Receptionist will ask you for your name and check your telephone number.
  3. She will also ask you to outline your health problem and whilst you do not have say, it is helpful for the doctor to determine call-back priorities based on clinical need.
  4. If you prefer to speak to a specific doctor, let the receptionist know – whenever possible we will arrange it.
  5. These routine telephone triage assessments usually take place between 09.00 and 10.30. However, urgent calls will be dealt with throughout the day by the Duty Doctor.  If you need us to call you between certain times, let the receptionist know. Where possible we will arrange this.
  6. The doctor will always try and call you as soon as they can. The time of the call can depend on the clinical information you provide, and the priority of other patients awaiting a call-back.
  7. To make the best use of our resources, the doctor may book you in with an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, or one of our practice nurses.
  8. Please note that the doctor will only be able to deal with the issue discussed on the phone at the booked appointment.
  9. Depending on your condition, the doctor may advise you to contact another healthcare provider. e.g. a pharmacist, dentist, optician, hospital minor injuries unit or casualty department, or to call an ambulance.
  10. You may call NHS 111 for advice 24 hours a day.

Appointments are a valuable commodity; if you are unable to attend please let us know so we can offer it to someone else.

Please be assured that if you need to see a doctor urgently this will always be possible and we thank you for bearing with us during this implementation.
